Popery, the Consummation of Apostasy
Alas, the adversary of Jesus Christ and His true church has never slept. Perhaps the most alarming of all predictions and warnings of the rapid change destined to take place in the Christ’s church is the one recorded by Paul in his second letter to the Thessalonians:—
“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” —2 Thessalonians 2:3-10.
Exposed for all to see, Paul, foretells seeming rejection of the pagan gods and religion of Rome, and in their place, the establishment of the papal church—with the thinly disguised principles and practices of that selfsame paganism. Though today, Rome proudly boasts of victory over paganism, its boast is but a hypocritical veil, hiding it’s deeper corruptions and perverse religion. That this prophecy in Thessalonians was fulfilled by the establishing of the pagan “mysteries” of the Romish Church during the first six centuries of the Christian era, none can doubt. Today, in the 21st century, we see the fruit of her offspring. In stead of the primitive godliness of the early Christian church, we observe today, an ingenious substitution of a type of professed Christianity in place of stark paganism.
J. A. Wylie condenses this fact and clearly explains:
“Popery, then, we hold to be an after-growth of paganism, whose deadly wound, dealt by the spiritual sword of Christianity, was healed. Its [paganisms] oracles had been silenced, its shrines demolished, and its gods consigned to oblivion; but the deep corruption of the human race, not yet cured by the promised effusion of the Spirit upon all flesh, revived it anew, and under a Christian mask, reared other temples in its honor, built another Pantheon, and replenished it with other gods, which, in fact, were but the ancient divinities under new names. All idolatries, in whatever age or country they have existed, are to be viewed but as successive developments of one grand apostasy. That apostasy was commenced in Eden, and consummated at Rome.”—The Papacy; Its History, Dogmas, Genius, and Prospect, J.A. Wylie, Book I, chapter I, pp. 12, 13, 1852
The ancient church history books are replete with the evidence of this marvelous, satanic achievement. Its imperceptible, but steady progress away from our only Mediator, Jesus Christ has been foretold and exposed through the Word of God. Today, poor misguided men, women and children have degenerated toward the worship of a man—a “vicar of Christ”—and his system; a man who claims to “take the place of” or “come between” Christ and a world in need of a personal Savior. Jesus Christ is obscured by more and more layers added by man in the fabric of Popery. What has appeared to be a Christian religion, where Christ is at the head, instead, the roman bishop, the priest, the dead saint, the mother of Jesus, and even angels stand between the Lord and man. The telltale signs of apostasy should be apparent immediately, if one reads the Bible. Thus, according to God’s Word, Romanism is the false system of bondage and blindness, void of the true Spirit of Christ, opposed to liberty in its truest sense.
Another deception from this false system is the idea that meditative “spiritual exercises” draw us closer into the presence of God. Again, this is an impostor—spiritualism in its modern form. Christ’s true ministry in the sanctuary in heaven is forgotten. Millions are being deceived into a new spirituality, but in reality it is nothing more than the doctrines of demons or fallen angels.
But from this great politico/religious system, the Jesus of Revelation calls His people to come out. In this great religion are men and women, girls and boys who hear the voice of Jesus, “Come out of her my people.” Will these prophetic words be fulfilled. I believe so—very soon. “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Will you “follow the Lamb wheresoever He goeth”?
